How To Buy The Perfect Glassware For Your Dining Room And Home

Buying glasses is a matter of taste, literally and figuratively. Ask the wine buffs and they'll tell you all about the importance of the curve of the bowl in relation to the development of the bouquet, while aesthetes will wax lyrical about the tumblers they drank retsina from at their favourite bar in Hydra last summer. Neither is wrong, though - the right glass for you is the one that makes your drinking experience most enjoyable. The best example of this is perhaps the champagne flute. Traditionally, its tulip shape helps to conserve the fine bubbles and lets you see them run up the glass. But who wouldn't enjoy a glass of bubbly served in an open 'coppa' or saucer glass that doesn't conserve the fizz, but is apparently modelled on Empress Josephine's breast?

Mixing Styles

Organic Cradle Bedding

There is no harm in mixing styles, either: a cranberry-coloured, long-stemmed wine glass with a clear, etched tumbler looks as good as a serried rank of cut crystal wine glasses coming straight from a wedding list to your table. Just as it has become fashionable to mix your grandma's vintage rose china with simple white Conran plates, so it's equally cool to have an odd assortment of glasses mingling with your shop-bought best. Charity and antiques shops often have beautiful glasses on sale for a relative snip simply because they're not a complete set of six or 12. The idea is to create a table that's inviting and friendly rather than lay an imposing 'suite' of glasses that can intimidate and look too formal. However, before you start to add to your glass collection, here are a few simple guidelines to make buying as enjoyable as the tasting you'll experience after.

Form v Function

Wine writer and expert Nick Alabaster suggests you never buy a flared glass but stick to the usual tulip shape. 'The design of a tapering tulip glass focuses the wine's aromas and concentrates them for the nose. In a flared glass they are lost. It's also important never to fill the glass more than a third full - this is usually the widest part of the rim.'

Stem or Tumbler

The stem of a glass is simply there for you to hold so the wine can be served at the correct temperature and not altered by your own body heat. Naturally, if you're not drinking a fine Chablis, a beaker-style glass can be just as pleasurable.

One Size Fits All

If cost and space limit your collection of stemware, then Reidel (makers of the glasses most popular with sommeliers) suggest buying an all-purpose wine glass similar to the one designed by the California Wine Institute - it's five and a half inches tall with a one and three quarter inch stem. It's clear and tulip shaped, with an 8oz capacity, and is suitable for all wine varieties. The Chianti Classico from Riedel is one example.

Crystal or Glass?

Glass is made from a mixture of sand, soda ash, marble, dolomite, potash and borax heated to 105ºC. By adding lead oxide (at least 24%), it becomes lead crystal which is tougher than normal glass. Ironically, though, because crystal, costs more, it's often treated with more care than regular glass. It also appears more sparkly than simple glass because it has a higher refractive index. This makes cut crystal especially pretty in candlelight.

Trends in Glasses

Kate Dyson of the The Dining Room Shop (which sells contemporary and antique glass) has her finger on the stem, as it were, of what's hot and what's not in the style stakes.

o People are definitely mixing old styles with modern ones. We've seen a huge increase in the popularity of champagne bowls, modern ones and those from the Fifties. A few years ago, people would only buy flutes.

o Classic cocktail glasses and vintage cocktail shakers are popular again, too - they add a sense of glamour that makes having a drink more of an occasion.

o Cut crystal from the Thirties is a very good buy. You can often pick up sets in a similar style to modern Waterford, for example, but because it's more second-hand than antique, you don't have the inflated price tag to match.

o The huge red wine glasses that were everywhere a few years ago are not nearly so popular now. People have realised they can quickly finish a bottle of expensive wine by filling a couple of them, not to mention the amount of alcohol one can consume without really noticing. Smaller glasses are definitely back in favour again.

Storage and Care

Keeping crystal for best seems rather dated and, while glasses won't collect as much dust hidden behind a cupboard door, neither will they be enjoyed. William Yeoward suggests crystal should be used regularly, as it's much sturdier than glass. But remember, it can break easily if subjected to rapid changes in temperature, so don't use it in the freezer, or take it from an ice bucket to a hot surface. Wash straight after use and dry by hand to avoid water marks. 'If you get them, use a white vinegar solution' suggests Christina Schmidt from Skandium.

Dishwasher or Hand Washing?

Cloudy glasses are the scourge of dishwasher lovers everywhere. As Kate Dyson explains, 'The cloudiness is the result of washing too often with detergents that are too aggressive. Always use a separate glass programme and never be tempted to mix glasses in with the pots and pans. Make sure your dishwashing machine has the right amount of salt and rinse aid, too, and buy the best-quality washing tablets possible, as this really does make a difference. Also be especially careful not to put antique or special glass in a dishwasher.' By far the best option, though, is to wash by hand. 'Just a little squirt of Fairy Liquid in a plastic bowl with hot water will do the trick. Wash glasses one by one, then rinse them in cold water. Finally, place them on a clean tea towel laid over the draining board and leave them to dry naturally in the air.'

The Pre-Wash

'Glass and crystal are porous and will pick up the smell of a dusty cupboard or washing up liquid,' explains Nick Alabaster. 'That's why I clean glasses just before use. Wash and rinse them in hot water, and turn them upside down to drain, but stand them up to dry'.

The Drying Game

According to Reidel, you need three linen, lint-free tea towels to dry stemware. One for draining and the others for polishing, one in each hand. Use the left hand to cradle the bowl, polishing with your right. Never twist the base and the bowl as they may snap.

Embody Sealy Mattress Foam Chair Bed

The History of the Mattress

Our parents have always told us how bad they had it when they were kids. With no video games, no Internet, and the constant battle of walking uphill both ways, it's amazing they had enough energy to bear children. But luckily, the younger generations have one rebuttal to the "when I was a kid" mantra: "Well, at least you didn't have to sleep on mattresses constructed of leaves and grass and held together with animal skin."

Organic Cradle Bedding

The history of the mattress is probably not something that is taught in most schools, with revolutions and wars often placed ahead of a good night's sleep. But, the mattress, like everything else, has a past, present and future.

Organic Cradle Bedding

In the beginning

In the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive beds, the ones our parents evaded made with leaves and grass and wrapped in hides. Though not as comfy as the modern day mattress, these first beds were the better alternative to sleeping on the ground and huddling together with other pre-historic humans for warmth, which might not have been as bad if pre-historic humans were better looking.

Moving up

Egyptian pharaohs began sleeping in beds raised from the ground after discovering that sleeping in higher platforms was more beneficial. Soon everyone began to "sleep like an Egyptian" and beds were raised off the grounds everywhere.

The Greeks are credited for making beds less about sleep and more about decor. They created ornate bedsteads, lacing them with hide strips and topping them with animal pelts. Pillows, costly and gaudy, became a symbol of status and typically those who were allowed to rest their heads, were heads above most others.

Then enter, who else, the Romans. The Romans are credited with discovering the concept of the waterbed. When in Rome, a person would recline in a cradle of warm water until they became drowsy. Once sleepiness set in, they were lifted onto a mattress and rocked to sleep. Romans, because of this, probably took several naps a day.

In the Renaissance Era, mattresses were filled with pea shucks, straw, or feathers and stuffed into cloth cases. They were then covered with velvets and silks. The 16th and 17th centuries saw mattresses similar to the Renaissance Era, but out went the velvet and silk and in came the latticework of rope. The term "sleep tight," because the latticework needed regular tightening, was derived from this.

Taking Form

If mattresses could talk, they would probably say that the 18th century belonged to them, but the Industrial Revolution hogged all their limelight. It was this era that saw mattresses take shape, form, and become an integral part of a restful life. They began being stuffed with cotton or wool and mattress covers started to be made of quality linen. Then, perhaps actually being the best thing since sliced bread, the box spring was introduced.

After the box spring, the coil spring and the innerspring mattresses sprung up. With these, so did mattresses as we now know them.

Bedding on them

Mattresses, as they are in the present day, have come a long way from animal skins and grasses of yore. Gaining in quality and comfort, they are now viewed less as beds and more as a vital part of life: a good mattress is essential to sleep function, a function that dictates a great deal of our health, and our lives.

While the past saw mattresses made of leaves, perhaps the future will see them stuffed with clouds. In the meantime, natural latex, visco memory foam, and polyurethane are the best bets for present comfort.

Different Personalized Baby Gifts Ideas for Special Occasions

Personalised gifts can make anybody happy. It is an ideal present that you can give someone to show that you care. There are personalised gifts for everyone from adults to kids. Even newborn babies can be given personalised gifts. Thinking of what gift you can give a small baby? Given below are some of the personalised baby gifts ideas for infants and newborns.

Organic Cradle Bedding

One of the best personalised baby gifts is a gift basket. Customised baskets give you an option to give the baby a variety of things. You can load the gift basket with feeding bottles, bibs, pacifiers, teethers, etc. to form a beautiful gift basket. Another basket can have all the bath essentials that a baby needs like soaps, baby oil, baby bathing gel, baby shampoo, baby cream and baby powder. In this manner you can create a gift basket filled with any kind of goodies that you like.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Babies need many clothes, so you can think of giving personalised clothes as gifts too. You can either get the name of the baby stitched on them, or printed or even embroidered. These personalised clothes would include bibs, caps, blankets, shoes, booties, sleepwear, pillows, bedsheets, etc. You can write a personalised message on them too. Although the babies will outgrow these clothes and other articles, it will be things that can always be preserved as long lasting memories.

One of the other personalised baby gifts are piggy banks. These are not the traditional types of piggy banks that are in the form of a box only. But piggy banks come in the shape of animals, cartoon characters, etc. They are designed in such a manner that they are able to entertain the babies. And when anybody gives the baby a cash gift, the money can always be put in the piggy bank and put some good use. These too can be personalised with the baby's name, date of birth and your very own personal messages.

And last but not the least, personalised toys are definitely the best presents that you can give a child. There are different gifts like plastic building blocks, rattles, moving toys, etc. that are made keeping in mind the safety of a baby. If the baby uses a cradle, then personalised hanging toys could be of great help. These toys can be made colourful using bright shades, so that the baby can have fun watching and playing with them.

You shouldn't have much difficulty in finding gifts for babies. There are many shops which only sell baby stuff. This is available in a variety of patterns and beautiful colours. They are manufactured using materials that are extremely safe and non - toxic and do not contain sharp or dangerous parts. Each and every gift is unique in itself and gives you enough scope to personalise it in the way you want. So when you choose among personalised baby gifts, be sure to choose ones with lots of colours or lights, as this is what attracts a baby the most.

The Five Main Reasons Your Head Is Itching

There are numerous different problems that might make you scratch your head like crazy. Let me detail the five most frequent symptoms and possible methods that might decrease your physical distress.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Contact dermatitis

Organic Cradle Bedding

The most frequent root cause of scratching and rash. It could be an allergic or irritant condition. It's caused by connection with a foreign chemical substance. The ingredient may be a new hair shampoo, cleaning soap, hair dye or any other hair supplement - specially if it contains some sort of alcohol. The primary treatment method is to locate the substance which is the cause and get rid of it or stop using it. Sometimes you might get some medication. Ordinarily prescription antibiotics will be required if the skin has become infected.

Seborrheid dermatitis

It's most often known as dandruff amongst adults and for infants it's known as cradle cap. Dandruff normally will cause very itchy head. The cause is overabundance of scale produced by the skin. The actual source of seborrhoeic dermatitis stays undiscovered, but scientist have confirmed that yeast likely plays a vital factor within the predicament. Dandruff is most typical during the early adulthood. You will have to use specific shampoo to remove it. Hair needs to be carefully dried and properly moisturized. No one shouldn't use soaps that dry your skin.

Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis takes place when skin cells over the scalp are made more rapidly than it's normal. It's the most widespread skin condition which could produce a red rash. Scratching may possibly occur, but usually it doesn't. Psoriasis typically occurs after the age of 30. In addition to the scalp a few other areas of the body usually are involved such as the elbows and knees and even the skin above the small of the back.

Head lice

Scratchy head may also be caused by head lice. They are a very widespread cause in youngsters simply because it spreads with close contact. Lice generally nourish themselves on human blood during which they make saliva. This activates a reaction that causes the itchiness, but not right up until several weeks after you have had lice. Only just third of the population develop this symptom, so just because someone isn't scratching doesn't mean the don't have lice. The vast majority of itching is usually right behind the ears and also at the back of the head where lice love to reside. It is recommended to use permethrin based hair shampoo to get rid of lice. Lice also like to jump on pillows and sheets so it's also very crucial that you thoroughly clean all of your clothing and bed linen as lice can stay alive a long while without human contact.

Stress

Strain may cause a number of problems. Scalp stress takes place when the stresses of daily life and both internal and external work together to cause your head itch therefore making you need to scratch. Our recommendation here is to never scratch it. I know this must be the most difficult part, but in most cases it's the only way.

Toddler Blanket Can Serve Multiple Purposes

Babies grow up much faster than their grown up counterparts. One of the concerns for the parents is the clothing and bed accessories matching such growth. Things that is adequate today suddenly turns out absolutely inadequate some days later. That is why dual purpose articles are necessary to address the problem.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Growth Problems

Organic Cradle Bedding

Fast growth in the child is evident from the fact that child that is static on the bed one day not able to make much movements, starts crawling after a few months. A few more months and they would start walking their first steps. While the moment is highly cherished by parents, it also brings up consequential problems of matching clothing, apparel, and bedding sets.

Baby Blanket Matching the Growth

People who have already bought baby blanket for their loved ones find that such blankets quickly seem to become shorter in length. In truth it is the child that has outgrown the blanket. Economic consideration may not always permit changing the blanket opting for a bigger size. Yet adjustments are necessary. Usually one of the best ways of buying blankets befitting the growth of the baby is buying a larger blanket in comparison to the size of the child for whom the blanket is purchased. Taking such steps will ensure that even if the child grows fast, he or she will not face problems of having a shorter blanket.

Toddler Blanket Sleeper

One of the options that parents should like to consider is the toddler blanket sleeper. It is possible wearing them over a light dress. It will protect the child effectively against atmospheric influences even when the child is moving around. Pajamas or full dresses with feet, or the toddler blanket sleeper that is hooded are a couple of most popular items. Numerous styles of such blanket sleepers are there and one can surf the Internet for getting the best of all.

Points for Consideration

For choosing the best toddler blanket it is necessary taking care of certain aspects such as -

•Blanket fabric must be soft and smooth so as not to irritate the tender skins.

•Size should be such that it is neither too big nor too small.

•Thread count is important. At least 200 thread counts make the best of the fabrics for toddler blanket.

•Cotton or natural wool should be the ideal choice for the toddler blanket.

In any case, it is the comfort and hygiene of the baby, contemporary style and affordable price that would be the major considerations in case of toddler blanket.

Newborns - Baby Gear You Can't Live Without

Well, OK, it's confession time. You (and your baby) can live without many of the items below. But even apart from the natural desire of parents to make their baby's life as easy as possible, many of these help ensure their health and safety.

Organic Cradle Bedding

You'll need an infant car seat, even if you don't intend the baby to go out often. Many hospitals will require you to have one before they'll release mother and child. If you don't have one, some will supply you with a temporary. They have their insurance regulations to follow, you know!

Organic Cradle Bedding

You'll want to carry your baby around, but your arms will get tired. A good strap-on baby carryall will do wonders for you and your child. Like a good backpack (whether worn on the back or front), it will free your arms and save your back. They're also great for encouraging the bonding between parent and child that comes from physical closeness.

An adjunction to that is a good stroller. Even with a good carryall, babies can get heavy after a while. A sturdy stroller with a braking mechanism for hills and near the curb is always useful. Having one with an adjustable hood allows for the right amount of shading and sunlight filtering, too.

Both at home and away, a good diaper changing station is never wasted. A portable one will help you during those spontaneous moments that always seem to come at the most inconvenient time.

There are times when you want to rest your baby to relieve your arms and still want the baby to get a great view. A bassinet or cradle with adjustable arms is the perfect solution. Naturally, you'll want one that is ultra-sturdy. Make sure there are no sharp corners and look for ones that provide a means of securing blankets, buttoning in cushions and other handy add-ons.

As your baby develops, providing him or her with a means to exercise those burgeoning muscles promotes health and psychological well-being. A rocking chair with straps is useful. A bouncy seat with musical danglers is another good option. Make sure that any noisemakers are removable. You don't want to drive yourself crazy!

Speaking of music, a good CD or iPod-type player with speakers can be a great addition to the 'baby toolkit'. White noise helps some young ones deal with colic. Classical music helps young minds develop. Gentle sea sounds and lilting tunes provide a peaceful atmosphere that will help both child and parent.

Of course, there are a whole range of toys that serve a number of good purposes. Babies are exploratory by nature. Providing safe things that will go into the mouth, but only so far, is one category. Building blocks of various sizes help the developing mind learn about shape, volume and other basics. Sound-making toys help them correlate self-initiated movement with the resulting noise. Learning cause and effect early is a big boon.

Don't forget to stock the medicine cabinet with that whole range of needed items for emergencies!

Consumer Reports: Baby Swings

Designed for indoor use, baby swings typically consist of a seat suspended by a pair of arms attached to a frame with wide-standing, tubular-metal legs. Swings come in windup and battery-operated models. To make a windup model swing, you crank a handle at the top or side of the frame, which provides 20 to 30 minutes of movement. Battery-operated swings are driven by a motor that generally uses four D batteries. Such models emit a low churning noise with each passage of the swing. Most of the swings on the market today are battery-operated.

Organic Cradle Bedding

With either a windup or battery-powered mechanism, swings are lightweight and can be easily moved from room to room, although some are more maneuverable than others. Standard-size swings eat up a fair amount of room, so they may not be for you if floor space is scarce.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Some parents of colicky babies swear by swings. Other parents say they get by just fine without one. You may find that a swing comes in handy if your baby needs to sleep in a semi-upright position due to a cold or stuffy nose (although a bouncer seat may do the trick as well).

SHOPPING SECRETS

Decide whether you want a windup or battery-operated swing.
A windup model may be perfectly adequate as long as it's stable and has a well-padded, reclining seat that affords easy access. Battery-operated models usually have a sleeker design plus more features, such as speed controls, baby-sound activation, and toys attached to a front play tray. However, many parents find the motors noisy. If possible, try display models in the store (with batteries) or double-check the store's return policy. Then, test the swing as soon as you get home so you'll have the option of taking it back within the time allowed.

Try your baby out in a friend's swing or bring baby to the store with you for test runs when you're shopping. Keep in mind that your baby may not like the motion of a swing at first, although that could change after a few tries. Your baby's reactions may help you decide on one brand over another, or whether you're even a candidate for a swing in the first place.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

The major brands of baby swings are, in alphabetical order: Fisher-Price, Graco, J. Mason, and Kolcraft. Prices for windup swings range from to . The price range for battery-operated swings is to 0.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Crotch post. A built-in crotch post prevents a baby from sliding out of the seat--an extra safety measure. There should also be a safety belt, which most models have.

Frames. Swings without a top crossbar make it easier to put your baby in and take him or her out again. At the very least, look for a swing that has a wide, sturdy stance and folds or dismantles for storage.

Seat cover. Look for plush padding that's machine-washable.

Seat settings. Multiple reclining positions can help you find the most soothing posture for your baby, which is especially important if baby likes to nap while swinging (a common combo).

Speeds. Some battery-operated swings give you up to eight speeds, but more than four is overkill. The faster speeds may annoy rather than relax your baby.

Swinging motion. Some swings have two swinging motions: side to side and front to back. That's nice but not essential.

Timer. Some models feature a time-remaining indicator that can help you keep tabs on the action.

Toys. Many swings come equipped with toy bars or trays, which is an option your baby may enjoy. But make sure they're within reach so your baby can actually touch them. Also check that they're safely attached and have no small parts that might cause choking.

Nice but not necessary extras include a front tray, with or without attached toys; sound (classical music and lullabies), which may or may not be soothing to little ones and grown-ups; a light display; storage baskets on the side to hold toys and accessories; and a remote control to activate the swinging action, music, or both. Some swings try to sense when baby needs comforting and respond automatically. A built-in sound sensor "hears" baby's sounds and responds by swinging and/or playing music.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Look for a swing that has a sturdy, stable frame with strong posts and legs as well as a wide stance to prevent tipping. The bottom of the legs or frame should not protrude so far that you're likely to trip over them, however. Examine the seat. It should be well padded and have a crotch post (if it's not a travel version) to prevent your baby from sliding out. It should also offer a partially reclined position for snoozing. You'll also want a secure safety belt.

If you buy a model with a cradle or bassinet attachment, make sure it's well mounted underneath, with no potential for breaking loose. If you opt for a battery-operated swing, come equipped with four C or D cell batteries to test products in the store and hear the sound of the motor (a deal-killer for many parents). As a rule, swings don't come with batteries included.

Infant Crib Bedding Safety

When parents leave the hospital with their newborn, the hospital is required to check that the car has a car seat. Parents may be aware of this rule, but not everyone realizes all the safety standards of infant crib bedding and furniture. In mid-October, over 40,000 drop-side cribs were recalled by the U.S. Product Safety Commission after receiving word of several injuries due to faulty side rail detachments. It is vital that parents continually check the U.S. Product Safety Commission's website for any recalls on products and read up on tips to ensure their child's safety.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Before purchasing an infant crib, check for peeling paint and splinters. Older cribs may have been originally painted with lead and of course you don't want your baby hurting himself on any splintered wood. The slat spacing should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches thick which is about the width of a soda can. Most new cribs shouldn't have this problem. If the crib has posts, they should be at least 16 inches above the end panels so your baby's clothing cannot get caught on them. Also make it a habit to frequently check the crib's hardware to check for loose, missing, or broken parts.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Choosing the correct mattress for both infant and toddler beds is very important. The mattress should always be firm and the baby should always sleep on his back. If a mattress is too soft, the baby can easily roll over and suffocate. The mattress should be 27 by 51 inches and you should not be able to place more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame. When your baby reaches about 6 months and can fully stand, adjust the crib height to the lowest setting in case he's an escape artist. You don't want him to crawl out of the crib when it's several feet from the floor.

You might be tempted to leave a toy or a bottle in the crib with your baby at night, but this can pose as a serious danger. Always remove all items when you put him to sleep. Also make sure that the mobile is high enough from the crib so he can't grab it. If he can stand, the mobile needs to go. Babies have a lot of free time on their hands so it won't take long for him to figure out how to pull off pieces. Another safety tip is not to fill the infant crib bedding with blankets, sheets, and pillows. All those blankets can easily entangle the baby.

One of the most dangerous cribs is the drop-side crib mentioned earlier. Most manufacturers have completely eliminated making these cribs because they are so dangerous. Unfortunately, many parents still continue to use them. It's best to simply avoid this type of crib and purchase another crib or a bassinet. Cribs continue to be the leading cause of injury and death among all baby products, so always err on the side of caution. Continue to check toddler beds and toddler furniture too as your child grows to keep him safe.

Making Your Own Crib Bedding - What You Need to Know

If you have lately shopped for crib bedding, you certainly have learned by now that the price tag for a crib or cradle bedding set ranges from a few hundred dollars - usually the classic bedding sets with simple design - to a few thousand dollars - the more unusual ones, with unique or sophisticated designs.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Results from query analysis on the major search engines let to the conclusion that there is a conclusive evidence that the interest in making at least a piece of baby bedding is increasing. The most frequent searches focus on crib bumpers.

Organic Cradle Bedding

If choosing a theme and decorating a nursery are fun and exciting, making your own baby bedding yourself definitely requires energy, dedication, patience and skills. Before you decide to make your crib bedding, following are a few tips that could help you achieve good results:

First of all know how to comfortably handle and operate your sewing machine. Previous experience really helps. Besides, if you want a beautiful set for your baby, you need to plan ahead. Do not improvise. Acquire the necessary information. Try your local library first to keep the cost low.
It is also very important to measure your crib and make a sketch first before defining the amount of material you are going to use. Making a sketch could mean the difference between buying enough fabric for both sides of the bumper instead of one only.

Once your sketch is done, you will have a clearer idea of the scope of your project. You then need to make a list of everything you need before you hit the store. Include fabrics, threads and padding. It is always a good idea to start with the fabric so you can choose the appropriate thread color. If possible choose 100% cotton, soft material.

Now that you are ready to sew, expect spending weeks not days on your project. Completely finish one piece of bedding before starting any work on the next one. As you carry out your project, do consider and implement the safety features. Your baby's safety depends on it. Ensure that the bottom sheet has a secure fit to the crib mattress. If the fitted sheets gets loose and comes off, it will constitute a serious hazard to your baby. Also remember that the bumper ties must firmly keep the bumper pads to the crib sides. All of the ties must be short enough to avoid any risk of entanglement.

These simple safety rules are by no means exhaustive and are intended to help you create safe bedding for your little one. Now that you are more aware of this subject, your are now in a better position to determine whether making your own crib bedding is an option for you. Help is available if you would rather use someone else's services.

How Long Will My Newborn Sleep?

The average working American sleeps approximately 7 ½ hours per night, with only work and related activities topping sleep time at about 8 ½ hours. However, a one-month-old averages out needing 15 ½ hours of sleep at night and day time. Yes, your brand-new bundle of joy will most likely spend the majority of his infancy with his eyes closed.

Organic Cradle Bedding

What is thought to be astonishing brain development occurs during baby's 8 ½ hours of night time sleep and 7 hours of day time sleep, broken up into three naps. But, if you're like most parents, you soon discover that you won't be getting to sleep a straight 8 ½ hours while your child sleeps or even the average 7 ½ for most Americans. Newborns typically sleep no longer than two hours at a time. Why?

Organic Cradle Bedding

Babies spend a significant amount of time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a lighter, easily disrupted form of sleep. This REM sleep greatly aids a child's growth.

Don't rush to your doctor if your child sleeps a total of 11 or 17 hours per day. With babies, there are exceptions to every average. That's why they're called averages, because you take the child who sleeps 20 hours per day and the kid who sleeps 9 hours per day and lump them together with a variety of other figures to come up with the magic number: 15½ hours.

My daughter usually slept more than 15 hours per day when she was a newborn. But each and every day was different. Her moods changed daily, and our activities for the day varied, just as any other household would attest. Some days she decided to sleep less than usual and other days more. I suggest keeping a log of your baby's sleep patterns because chances are, he is developing his own sleeping timetable. It also might be helpful to jot down when he eats. That way, you can coordinate your day around his schedule. And most importantly, if at all possible, sleep when he sleeps.

Amish Baby Cribs - Start a Family Tradition

Family is one of the core concepts and essentials of the Amish community. It is part of the belief that the hearts of the family are connected as are all hearts connected to God. This means that each child is a treasured gift from God and it is not uncommon for there to be seven or more children in a generation. Families are close and as a result fathers often work either on family farms or in shops that are close to home while the mother stays home providing for the house and the children. This allows the families to spend quality time together through both work and play activities and provides parents with a way to show their children through example the ways and skills that are needed in life.  When a new child comes into the world it is a time of rejoicing and celebration and a crib is built for the child. It is built with care either by the father of the child, other relative or by someone close to the family within the community.

Organic Cradle Bedding

An Amish crib is fashioned from solid woods and make use of the most time honored furniture making techniques. The cribs are solid wood and makes use of mortise and tenon joints in order to make sure it can survive the use it will get as the child grows. In fact, the best quality pieces are made by small shops usually built directly on to the home or on the family property. They are family run and are nothing like larger factories that produce furniture of lesser quality.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Having a shop such as this allows the craftsman to take his time making each piece carefully and this allows them to pay attention to details. These details are not scroll work or finials or any other fancy design in fact, cribs are always made from the simplest of designs. The construction is designed so there is no chance that the crib will fall or collapse and they meet all national safety standards in regards to spacing, strength, and the height of the rails and making sure there is nothing ornamental that can be used to climb on.

In addition, no harmful finishes are used either as another safety features. In fact, the finishes are made from natural oils and water based finishes that are made using Tung oil and beeswax both of which are non-toxic. The most common of these finishes is the conversion varnish. This protects the wood from any damage and will not flake, peel or come off if chemicals are introduced.

There are a variety of styles that this type of furniture comes in including traditional, Shaker, spindle, Cottage, sleigh and Mission. You can get them in Red oak, Quarter sawn white oak, cherry, Hickory, Black walnut or Hard Maple. Consider before purchasing whether you are going to want a cradle, bassinet, and conversion or transition bed. The Amish do create pieces such as this and it should be taken into consideration since conversion and transition beds prevent the need for additional bedding options as children grow.

Specialty Produce Wholesaler Frieda's Sets the Standard With Customer Service That Goes the Distance

As a teenager, Karen Caplan and her sister Jackie learned about customer service the old-fashioned way. They spent weekends in the offices of Frieda's, their mother's specialty produce business, answering customer inquiries and sending recipes on how to prepare the company's exotic fruits and vegetables. Frieda Caplan had encouraged shoppers to ask questions and request free recipes at a time when no one else was doing it.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Nearly three decades later, Karen Caplan, now president and CEO of the Los Alamitos, Calif., company, and VP Jackie Caplan Wiggins continue to set trends in customer satisfaction.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Frieda's, which last year did million in business selling everything from sweet dumpling squash to morel mushrooms, is the nation's largest wholesaler of specialty produce, exotic fruits and other foods. And it has honed customer satisfaction and education to a fine art. At a time when analysts and customers lament often slow corporate responses to consumer e-mails, Frieda's fields up to 500 queries week (most of them e-mails), typically replying within a day of receipt. And while other companies have been criticized for "dumb sizing" -- downsizing without regard to customer service or product quality - Frieda's continues to focus on making customers happy. It's a strategy that has helped build customer loyalty and push revenues higher each year in recent times.

"Twenty-eight years ago, no one was doing customer service. If you wanted a recipe or a refund, they'd tell you to expect to wait six to eight weeks," says Karen Caplan, whose company was also the first in the specialty-produce industry to offer full retail refunds to unhappy customers, and within a week. "Today, I'm relentless about customer service."

Give Customers More Than They Expect
Frieda's was among the first to include product descriptions, usage, handling tips, country of origin, complete nutritional information on its labels. And if that weren't enough, Frieda's assigns three employees to answer the dozens of questions that arrive daily, such as:

"Can I freeze my yakisoba noodles?"

"What's the best way to store horseradish?"

"Can I grow elephant garlic from the bulb I bought?"

Other customers simply want a recipe for the dried chipotle peppers they purchased, or have an occasional gripe, says director of communications Tristan Millar, who oversees customer satisfaction. The company lists recipes and product tips on all its labels, as well as its phone number, address and e-mail address, urging buyers to request refunds if unhappy.

Giving consumers a quick turnaround is the key to keeping them happy. Even on weekends, Millar checks her e-mail for customer queries. And the staff is especially diligent before Thanksgiving, because they know buyers will want tips on how to make the most of their holiday produce. Indeed, it's an attitude more companies should adopt, says a study by Jupiter Communications, which says 46 percent of online businesses take five or more days to respond to e-mails, or don't respond at all, collectively losing millions of dollars. Many sites don't bother to list a customer service e-mail address.

To ease the job, Frieda's has set up its own resource library containing books and publications on just about every fruit, vegetable and exotic food the company could find. So when an e-mail asks about unusual uses of various melons, dried fruits or other products, employees can find a solution and fire off a quick answer. They then stash the information in a special binder, because inevitably, someone else will ask the same question.

How can a company of 160 employees that sells its products to retail grocery chains afford to lavish such attention on individual consumers?

Over the past five years, the privately held company's revenue has grown from about million to million annually. It's difficult to peg how much customer service has played in the growth. But Caplan says that Frieda's refund policy -- unique within the produce industry -- says it all.

"In the past year I can tell you we've refunded less than ,000, which tells you something about our quality," she says. To keep customers happy and complaints low, the company spends about 0,000 each year in employee time to field consumer requests. The results easily justify the expense, says Caplan, who believes the outreach helps build relationships and trust with end users.

"We have some customers who send the refund checks back to us," says Caplan. "Many have been customers for years and feel they have a relationship with our company. They just wanted to let us know that maybe some items were stuck together in the package."

Pick Employees Ripe for the job
The focus on customer satisfaction begins with the company's culture. Caplan and her clan pick employees with the same care it might select a good pepino melon.

"Make sure the people who are dealing with your customers are passionate about the product. Before they're hired, they have to give us the impression of being very customer- service oriented. You can't come in with a clerical mentality," she says. "They have to show a passion for food or customer service."

Frieda's builds on that natural interest by immersing employees in lore about the 500 specialty products it sells. Workers spend the first weeks of employment learning about products in the company's 81,000-square-foot warehouse in the Los Angeles suburb. They are encouraged to take products home and use them in their own cooking and recipes.

Training and education are the key to sparking workers' passion, Caplan says. Many companies are reluctant to shell out for such training, but it has been well worth it for Frieda's. "Some things you have to do on blind faith, just knowing that you're doing something positive for (employees) and they will do something positive for someone else," she says.

So when someone writes or calls with a question like, "How do I cook a squash?" employees know the answer, because it's part of their training. Caplan makes a point of reading every snail-mail letter herself, to keep taking the pulse of what customers want. In the end, she says, "If you aren't passionate about your products, don't expect customers to be."

Sleeping Arrangements for Newborns

It's not unusual for newborns to have unusual sleeping habits, particularly for them to want to sleep during the day, and stay awake at night. Remember, in the womb its dark all the time, so night and day mean nothing to them. If your baby's sleeping habits need some adjustment, here are some ways to get him on track.

Organic Cradle Bedding

Don't keep quiet during the day when he's sleeping
When he sleeps during the day (and all babies will) leave the door to his room open, and go about your normal daily routine. Keep the television or stereo on. This will accomplish two things. First, he will learn to sleep even through noise, which is important, since this child will be taking naps in your home for four or five years. Secondly, he will get the idea that the daytime is not the right time for long periods of sleep.

Organic Cradle Bedding

If he sleeps more than three hours at a stretch, wake him
Babies should nap during the day, of course, but more than three hours is not a nap. To get him awake, try holding him upright and tickling his feet. If that doesn't work, take off his shirt. The chill will wake him. Don't leave him uncovered for long, though. Once he is awake, sing or talk to him to keep him that way for a while. This is a great time to put him on a mat for some tummy time if it's not feeding time.

Now, of course the second half of this problem is the staying awake at night. This is going to take some time, and babies usually make some significant adjustments within about three weeks, though you will be getting up for feedings at least once at night for a bit longer. Some things you can do to make him more likely to sleep longer and better during the night are:

· Put him in bassinet or cradle for the first few weeks. A crib can seem huge to a newborn, so you might find that he sleeps much better in the coziness of a smaller space.

· Give him some soothing sounds. Not only will this act as a sort of "white noise" to block out other sounds, it will also be soothing to him. Soft, classical music works well, but so can the constant hum of a fan.

· Keep the room at a comfortable temperature. If he's too cold or too warm, just like the rest of us, he won't sleep as well.

· Establishing a routine. Your child will sleep better if he has an established sleeping routine for day and night. Put him down for naps at the same time each day, and put him down for bed at the same time each night. Create some bedtime habits that will signal to the baby that bedtime is near. A bath or a story can be a nice way to wind down and get ready for restful sleep.

Sleeping habits are a challenge for most new mothers, primarily because you're so tired yourself. One word of advice - don't try to make baby sleep at night by not allowing him to nap during the day. It will backfire. Babies need lots of sleep, and naps are a critical part of this. Just don't let him sleep for too long at a stretch during the day. Give it some time, and take some naps yourself, and before you know it, everyone will be sleeping soundly through the night.
